THE GREEN SCHOOL IN BALI

THE GREEN SCHOOL IN BALI

Sara

Because you lived in Bali perhaps you saw some of what this young architect talks about in her TED Talk.

"The Green School" is the product of her father and others.

Magical houses, made of bamboo

You've never seen buildings like this. The stunning bamboo homes built by Elora Hardy and her team in Bali twist, curve and surprise at every turn. They defy convention because the bamboo itself is so enigmatic. No two poles of bamboo are alike, so every home, bridge and bathroom is exquisitely uniq...

I’ve been to the green school 😊 and know kids that have gone there and teachers. Cool building to say the least. Thank you. Hugs. I’m off to Zzzzz

thank you.  I had hoped you had been to THE GREEN SCHOOL.  Maybe we can talk about that experience some time.

It’s a cool building, but the school is not for everyone. My besties kiddo went for half a year in 2012 when he was 11 turning 12. The open concept, as in No walls, was often a distraction for him, he’s brilliant but highly creative, so he was in a trance half the time sucked into the glorious nature. Hahahaha. He’s grown now, and I’m sure he still looks back fondly on the experience of going there and living in Bali - but expat tutors are not cheap. Lol! What are your thoughts on the school or is it the architecture that has you intrigued.

Thank you for sharing real experience with THE GREEN SCHOOL.

The Open School concept (how schooling was done thousands of years ago by even Socrates) was a fad in the 1970s when I first got involved as a volunteer gifted education teacher in Delray Beach.

The architectural firm I worked for/with/as an associate and project architect designed two identical OPEN SPACE schools.  Both middle schools

Jupiter, Florida
Boynton Beach, Florida (my sons went to that one)

I did super graphics for the two schools through S&T Graphics & Signage a separate but connect company of the architectural firm:  Schwab & Twitty.  I ran the G&S company in conjunction with being a project architect with them.

As far as I know much of the OPEN SPACE concept in Jupiter is still being used.

The teachers and principal of the Boynton Beach school HATED it.

They immediately pushed bookcases to visually separate the classrooms

Then they had walls built to physically and completely separate them.

My understanding through scuttlebutt back in 1976 is that the principal was a borderline reject who was given the school to run and his teachers were all rejects or unwanted teachers from other schools.

Hmmm?

My impression when I had contact with some teachers, the vice principal and a counselor was that they were all very narrow-minded, out-dated and poor quality teachers.

I had been working one 3 different degrees at FAU in education

1. M.Ed. in Gifted Education (incomplete)
2. B.S. in Middle School Math (incomplete)
3. M.E.d in Guidance & Counseling of Gifted, Talented and Creative students (completed in 1979)

and had been accepted into the Ph.D. program in Ed Psych majoring in Creative Thinking and minoring in Counseling and Gifted Education.

I had a run in with some due to something that happened with my late son Jeff, my oldest son.

OPEN SPACE DESIGN is not suited for everyone.

It is a learned set of skills or a personal learning preference.

The study and use of the principles of PREFERRED THINKING, LEARNING, TEACHING, TRAINING STYLES has been the foundation of my work since 1976.

Montessori schools and other alternative schools have used it for centuries not just as a fad as it was in the 70s.

When you are in town, meaning Athens, again let's talk more or by SKYPE.

The unique architecture is what attracted my interest while watching the TED Talk by the daughter of the architect of THE GREEN SCHOOL, who is also an architect who is naturally designing in Bali using bamboo.
