Throwback Thursday about my Family
THROWING BACK on THURSDAY in my life.
My mother came to the US when she was 16 as a contracted indentured servant to work for a family in Holyoke, Massachusetts...25 or 26
My father came to the US 1st when he was 14 with his mother and 3 brothers (13, 11 and 1). She and my uncle Stan were put into quarantine for a time while my dad and other 3 brothers were provided beds where an Italian man maybe in his 30s watched over them.
Shortly the 5 of them were sent back to Blythe, England, denied entrance into the US (much like today).
My grandmother died of DT shortly after.
2 years later my grandfather who was a mechanical repairman on ships at sea returned to bring my father to the US to Mckeesport, PA near Pittsburgh
In a couple years the Great Depression happened.
Both of my parents moved to Detroit to find work
They met at a party held for young people by my Grandpa & Grandma Mulholland, paternal grandparents of my cousins, children of my Aunt Sally, my mother's sister (one of 4 girls and 4 boys)
You came to the US for a new life from Cuba.
My parents came from Scotland and England in search of a new life from the Depression after WWI in UK.
Immigrants have made this country from teh 1600s onward.
During the 1950s
Aunt Mary & Uncle Alec came to visit us in Detroit
Cousin Bert & a friend came to visit us in Detroit (Aunt Mary's son)
Aunt Jean came with Cousin Jean (Aunt Mary's youngest child) who moved to Denver to work on a masters degree then returned to Scotland to live
Cousin Lilian (Aunt Mary's oldest daughter....moved to the US after WWII to Platte, SD)
I went to Scotland and England both in 1977 and 1978.
I visited my Aunt Mary and Uncle Alec at their home in Kirkcaldy in 1977
In 1978 I introduced Merry and soon to be 2nd wife, soulmate to them in Scotland.
Families stretched across the Atlantic don't always see each other very often.
