When you stare at the lttle televson screen n the
passenger seat n front of you and you see that the
plane s currently flyng n the NEUTRAL ZONE just
south of the entre southern border of Iraq and wll
be for over 2 hours a lttle concern develops.
I left Chenna by a wld cab rde through the cty to
the arport...followed by two+ hours of standng n
check-n...luggage...customs...mmgraton and a
seres of 3 separate x-ray check lnes. Then t was
off to Duba (3 1/2 hours) wth a 1 1/2 stayover n
Duba's very contemporary, brand new arport and the most
talked about DUTY FREE SHOPS...a MALL wth an arport
wrapped around t.
Then off to Turkey flyng over other natons that my
country does not have the best of relatonshps wth.
fnally I arrved n Istanbul for the fourth tme n 3
years. It was lke comng home. I knew all the
procedures and knew how much the Vsa fee would be.
Only wat was standng at the carousel for my luggage.
Jonathon you can relate to that (ha ha).
Then as I walked through the last check pont I heard
my name...t was my frend Esra and her mother who had
come to pck me up at the arport. Esra also found a
nce hotel for me located near the ancent area.
After I unloaded my two bags and changed clothes we
went out to dnner at a wonderful restaurant n a
Byzantne buldng...courtyard of 4 colonades wth
four sets of arches connectng each set of 4 columns
all around a landscaped courtyard.
Esra and her Mom treated me to a meal of samples of
tradtonal Turksh food...
plav = rce wth peas
bamya = okra
spanak = spnach
bber = green pepper (I passed on that)
dana et = beef course n sauce
bakla
dolma
kabak = squash
patlcan = egg plant
fasule = bean dsh
Everythng that I tasted was great. None of t was
spcey...after over two weeks of eatng spcey foods
n Malaysa...Sngapore...Sr Lanka...and Inda my
mouth was not sure what to do.
No need for a gallon of ce cream or ltre or two of
orange juce to wash down the spce.
Off to tour tomorrow and smply have fun n Istanbul.
Possbly wll try to set up a meetng wth a
publsher.
Off to bed now.
Merhaba from Wanderng Alan
